Pilots 2021

CAE forecasts pilot demand returning by end of 2021. Training company CAE is forecasting a need for 27,000 new professional pilots by the end of next year, 2021. In addition, the Canadian firm’s just-released 2020-2029 Pilot Demand Outlook says more than 260,000 new pilots will be needed worldwide over the next 10 years. While CAE’s forecast acknowledges that demand for pilots has decreased significantly during 2020, it expects the active pilot population to return to 2019 levels in 2022. Pilot Season 2021 could easily be described as Pilot Season 2020+.

After being wiped out by the pandemic, 21 of the 61 comedies and dramas that were in contention last season are returning for a second shot at getting on the schedule during the 2021-22 television season. (Labeled “2020 holdover” in the grid below.)

Pilots 2021

Those pilots lucky enough to have had their options extended for another cycle will compete with a new round of scripts that were picked up after the world changed. Amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, networks are also contending with the new realities of production. That could affect the types of comedies and dramas that make the cut to both pilot and series pickup.

Pilot 2022

What’s more, the broadcasters also have numerous other shows that have been sitting on the shelf and are unlikely to air this season. That creates a logjam as networks will have fewer slots on their respective schedules.

With all of the above in mind, here’s a look at the pilots in contention for the 2021-22 broadcast television season as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW sift through of scripts and march forward in a bid to find the next breakout hits.
