Veteran actor Kyle MacLachlan played Orson Hodge in Desperate Housewives. Orson popped up towards the end of the second series and eventually left in season six (although he did make a few brief appearances in later seasons). Orson was supposed to be Bree’s perfect match but in the end their similarities got the better of them. Desperate Housewives lost much steam in the second half of its season, picking up some again in the final three episodes. Nonetheless, the show got a spot in the twenty most watched series in the 2009–2010 television season, at number twenty, averaging 12.82 million viewers (tenth, in scripted shows).
Orson Hodge is a fictional character on the ABC television series Desperate Housewives. The character is played by Kyle MacLachlan. Orson is introduced in the final episodes of the second season of the series, and becomes the main mystery of the third season. MacLachlan left the main cast in season six, but he has made guest appearances after his departure. Orson Hodge was Bree Van De Kamp‘s husband for a great while throughout the series of Desperate Housewives.
What Happened To Orson Hodge
The character of Orson Hodge was originally planned as a romantic interest for Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), according to executive producer Tom Spezialy, until Cherry decided to pair Orson with Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross). Marc Cherry‘s decision behind this was quite obviously to show the couple of Bree and Orson of the older class. He wanted for Orson to be seen as the elder wiser man, rather than the more rigid, tough stereotypical man. The matching of the pair is perfect, they are both incredibly stereotyped for each other. Instead of unexpectedly casting Bree with a ex-convict Plumber, Marc Cherry choses someone of a higher class to suit the expectations of the audience.

When Orson was introduced toward the end of the second season, he was originally to be a con artist. The ideology of “Beyond the White Picket Fence” would work perfectly here, as it suggests that every character with in Desperate Housewives has a dark side. A side which isn’t accepted with in a community. Marc Cherry deliberately tries to incorporate as many struggles as possible with in the series as he wants the females to be seen as desperate, not being able to cope with their marriage, career or lifestyle. A character portrayed by Julie White appeared in the second season finale and would have been Orson’s accomplice, but the entire storyline was discarded in favor of the mysterious disappearance of Orson’s wife and White’s character was not seen or mentioned again. MacLachlan commented that his character is “desperate to make this relationship with Bree work. Anything that tries to knock that apart becomes a threat. Cherry called Orson Bree’s perfect match, but added that their similarities “will ultimately prove to be the downfall of the relationship.”
